Defender 147 High Capacity Station Wagon for wildlife market

Land Rover's continuous programme of innovation and development has resulted in a new Defender model aimed at the exclusive game lodge and safari market.

In a continuous bid to cater for specialised, niched needs within the offroad environment, Land Rover South Africa has introduced a Defender model geared specifically for the game lodge and safari market. The new model is know as the Defender 147 High Capacity Station Wagon and offers unrivalled roominess and a seating configuration that can accommodate up to 11 people.

To ensure the stringest quality measures within its potential operating environment, a prototype Defender 147 had undergone a series of torture tests that simulate a 10 year life cycle within the space of a few weeks. This was done in conjunction with engineers from Land Rover in the UK. It has won high praise for its exceptional comfort, roominess and wide-ranging abilities. Engineers also praised the 147’s off-road prowess, which exceeding their most optimistic expectations.

The 147 is essentially based in a standard 110, but has an extra-long wheelbase, a heavy-duty suspension, two additional doors and up to 40 percent more legroom for the second and third rows of passengers. While the front and rear sections remain the same as the 110’s, the 147 has grown 935 mm in total length and wheelbase. Special adaptations include an additional door and C-pillar on each side, along with the adoption of heavy-duty suspension components consisting of a 1 580 kg-rated front axle, 2 200 kg rear axle, and co-axial helper springs. High capacity steel wheels are fitted.

Power is from Land Rover's acclaimed Td5 turbo-diesel engine, which develops 90 kW and 300 Nm of torque.

Land Rover believes that the 147 will not only appeal to the demanding game lodge and safari markets, but also find favour with discerning family buyers who aspire to the luxury of even more stretch-out room and loadability for extended Land Rover adventures.

In keeping with Land Rover tradition, the 147 badge indicates the length of the wheelbase in inches, with the 5,3m long vehicle still fitting in a standard garage if the spare wheel is stowed against the bulkhead in the
load area, rather than on the outside of the rear door.

The 147 is covered by Land Rover's three year/100 000 km warranty.
