2002 Ford Fiesta Range

With its upgraded Fiesta, Ford says "expect more"

A series of running changes across the Fiesta range has made these runabouts more bold, fun and exciting to own and drive. The most notable news is the introduction of the acclaimed 1.3-litre RoCam engine to the range to complement the existing 1.6-litre unit.

In the latest range, there are five models Fiesta models to choose from. These are the range-topping RSi 3-door, Forte 1.6 5-door, Flair 1.6 and 1.3 5-door, and Flite 3-door.

The 1.6-litre derivative of the RoCam has peak power delivery of 70 kW @ 5 500 r/min and maximum torque of 137 Nm at only 2 500 r/min. According to Ford, careful tuning of the induction system and meticulous preparation of the fuel system results in strong peak torque values together with enhanced torque characteristics towards the low end of the operating range adding up to outstanding driveability and superlative fuel consumption. At a steady 120 km/h, Ford claims the RoCam 1.6-litre engine to consume only 7.3 litres of fuel per 100 km.

The 1.3-litre version of the same engine boasts 55 kW of maximum power at 5 500 rpm and peak torque of 110 Nm peaks at 3 000 rpm. Both engines are linked to five speed manual 'boxes only.

The RSi pocket rocket establishes new levels of luxury, standard features and build quality for this class of vehicle. According to a Ford release, this include a four-speaker sound system with front loader CD player, power steering, air-conditioning, front electric windows, electric mirrors, central locking, a sports suspension and remote keyless entry, aggressive body kit with unique front and rear bumpers, side skirts, front fog lamps and a mesh front grille with body colour surround. Leather trim and dual airbags are factory options.
It also has a new suspension setup derived from Ford's acclaimed Puma Sport. This ensures better roll control, more outright grip, and better overall handling and stiffness without compromising on ride quality. Ten millimetres lower than before, the new suspension features springs that are ten percent stiffer than previous models, uprated gas-filled dampers and an increased diameter front anti-roll bar (15mm to 17mm).

Forte models combine the RSi's sporty performance and luxury with the practicality of a 5-door body. In looks it is similar to the RSi, apart from the extra doors, while it also adds a driver's airbag as standard as well as protective side mouldings, chrome badging, body colour side mirrors and a tailgate spoiler.

The Fiesta 1.6 Flair slots in a level below the Forte with fewer standard features, but without sacrificing on everyday luxury items. It has a four-speaker sound system with front loader CD player, power steering, central locking and remote keyless entry. The 1.3-litre version of the same car has the same basic features, the only obvious difference between them being the engine choice. Air-conditioning is an option on both cars.

The 3-door Flite is the entry-level model in the range and is distinguished by black bumpers, but offers the same outstanding performance figures as the more lavishly equipped Flair 1.3.

Ford considers the typical Fiesta buyer to be young, dynamic and on the fast track to the top. They are considered to be confident and sincere and extremely people orientated, believing in typical Western family values and valuing close relationships with friends. Hence the running changes made to the entire Ford Fiesta range compliment this lifestyle, while providing dynamic and exhilarating performance and excellent cost of ownership.

A new addition to all Fiestas in 2002 is a brand new Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) package designed to increase occupant comfort and well being. Thicker carpeting, the extensive use of insulating materials, and the
addition of foam insulators in the rear suspension cavities improve NVH to levels unseen in this class before.
The front suspension ahs also been revised. It has a separate sub-frame which serves to stiffen the front-end structure and isolates the powertrain more effectively for improved noise damping. McPherson struts, coil springs, a strengthened anti-roll bar, and special attachment bushes and perfectly tuned wheel geometry combine to deliver sure-footed, precise and confident turn-in.
At the rear, a twist-beam axle - incorporating stiffer arms and toe-correcting geometry, and softer spring rates to improve ride comfort - deliver the type of dynamic handling the typical Fiesta driver expects.

Carried over from the previous Fiesta range, the rear suspension has benefited from further lateral and structural stiffening, and the addition of foam insulators in the rear suspension cavities to reduce noise, vibration and harshness.
Safety features include side impact protection beams, a collapsible telescopic steering column with retention brackets, side impact pusher blocks in the doors, and a laminated windshield.

All Fiestas come with a three-year/100 000 km warranty, 15 000km service intervals and 3 year corrosion warranty.
