Ford Ranger Camper

Camper version for Ford Ranger

Another Ford Special Vehicle Project (SVP) has come off the ground, this time the Ford Ranger Camper catering for outdoor camping enthusiasts, a limited edition run of which only 200 units will be built.

This is the real thing, a vehicle for cross-country safari lovers and mechanically ideal for the rigours of African terrain. According for Ford, a number of special features Ranger Double Cab (available in either 4x4 or 4x2 derivatives) make this the ideal lifestyle vehicle.

To secure loads and to keep them dust-free, a colour coded, aerodynamically efficient and fully lockable fibreglass canopy has been fitted over the load bed. Other additions include a load box rubber liner, a 12-volt auxiliary power point in the instrument panel (next to the lighter), and a Front Runner Safari roof rack and mountings.

According to Ford, the Ranger bakkies range features the strongest ladder frame chassis in this segment. Power is from the superb 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, intercooled, turbo-diesel unit delivering 80 kW at 3 500rpm and 257 Nm of torque maximum at 2 000 rpm. Drive is through a five-speed manual gearbox with standard diff-lock on the Ranger Camper 4x2 model, while the 4x4 has a low range gearbox with transfer case allowing shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive.

Comfort and convenience items include air conditioning, power steering, electric windows, a tilt-adjustable leather covered steering wheel, front-loading CD sound system, lockable glove compartment, large door pockets, a front console storage area with two cup-holders and a document holder in the sun visor (useful for travel documents and maps).

Factory warranty is the standard 3 years/100 000km warranty, while service intervals are set at 10 000 km.
