2002 Land Rover Discovery TD5

Land Rover makes the Td5 a better Discovery II

Land Rover South Africa has announced that Discovery Td5 models are to benefit from subtle enhancements, mainly on the engine front to ensure more power, driveability and efficiency.

Improvements to 2002 model year Discovery II Td5s are mainly focussed on new engine components, while the automatic model benefits from a new electronic control unit (ECU) that not only ensure that the Discovery meets the most stringent EU3 European emissions standards, but allows for an even smoother power delivery.

According to Land Rover SA, power output of the 2.5 litre, five cykinder turbo diesel engine remains unchanged at 101 kW at 4 200 revs/min for both the manual and automatic versions, but the torque figure on the automatic has been increased from 315 Nm at 1 950 revs/min to 340 Nm at the same engine speed. It makes no mention of improved fuel efficiency.

All Discovery models feature all-terrain ABS anti-lock brakes, four-wheel Electronic Traction Control (ETC) and Land Rover's patented Hill Descent Control (HDC), while plusher XS and ES models are equipped with Land Rover's pioneering
Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) and Self-Levelling Suspension (SLS), which is widely regarded as one of the most important suspension breakthroughs in recent years. ACE offers more axle articulation and improved traction in low speed off-road situations, and maximised handling and grip during hard cornering or emergency avoidance manoeuvres. According to Land Rover, the system automatically senses the cornering forces and the position of the body, automatically activating rapid response hydraulics to ensure optimum roadholding.

The latest enhancements are in keeping with Land Rover's worldwide development programme to ensure that all the company's models remain at the cutting edge of technology, efficiency and reliability, according to Paul Melhuish, Marketing Director of Land Rover South Africa.

Apart from the 2.5-litre Td5, Disco II buyers can opt for a 132 kW/320 Nm 4-litre V8 petrol model with a choice of trim.
