Euro NCAP allowed
Ford to re-test the Mondeo after initial results for the frontal
impact showed scope for improving the restraint systems, steering
column and knee protection. But prototype parts were used in the
re-test, so we are unable to show the results here. Ford plans to
begin building improved cars from 5 November and Euro NCAP will
publish the results for these when available. The Mondeo tested here
was criticised for its unstable body structure and for allowing the
driver’s head and chest to hit the steering wheel. |

Frontal
Impact
|
 |
|
| Because
of the contact with the steering we’ve just mentioned, the driver
would have suffered injuries had the impact been more severe. There
were hard points under the steering that posed a risk to the
driver’s knees and upper legs. Ford says the planned modifications
will address all these points. equipment. This type of belt provides
superior protection to that of a two-point, lap-only belt. |
Side
Impact
|
 |
|
| The
Mondeo comes equipped with thoracic and head curtain airbags. These
worked well in protecting the driver while the curtain also
safeguards rear passengers. The car achieved maximum marks for this
part of the test cycle. |
Child
Restraint
|
 |
|
| A
pictogram on the end of the facia warned of the danger of placing a
child in a rear-facing restraint in the front passenger’s seat,
opposite an airbag. But the pictogram was hard to understand. There
was also a label, in English, French, and Spanish, on the
passenger’s sun visor, visible in the stowed position. However, it
did not mention the possibility of death or serious injury should
restraint and the three-year-old in a forward-facing one. These
worked reasonably well in protecting the children in frontal and
side impact. |
Pedestrian
Protection
|
 |
|
| The
bonnet provided some areas of protection for children and adults,
but the bonnet's leading edge and the bumper were stiff and
unforgiving. Ford needs to do more to protect pedestrians. |
Model
history and safety equipment
|
 |
|
| The
latest Mondeo was launched in Europe during November 2000. Equipment
fitted includes dual-stage front airbags, side airbags (thorax),
head-protecting curtain, front belt pre-tensioners and load
limiters, three-point centre rear belt, active head restraints and
ABS. ESP is optional. |
